We have been considering the possibility of converting our Chieftain Engines to J2B's rather than the Type Certificated J2BD Engine, since it seems that overhauling the Dual Magnetos is getting harder and harder.
Have learned that there are a couple of STC's available to do just that.
One is from Colemill and the other is from Micro AeroDynamics out of Anacortes, Washington.
I spoke with Micro AeroDynamic's representative yesterday who was quite helpful. Their STC only $695 per engine, and you can do one engine at a time. The only thing extra is you have get a different Mixture Control Bracket (P/N 41368-000) which is not included in the price, and not available from them. A quick search online, however, revealed that the bracket is readily available for around $500.00.
Another thing to consider is the core difference cost between the two engines. Our overhauller said that they have a lot more J2BD cores than they do J2B cores so it may be a problem. They're going to get back to us for the additional cost.
Was wondering if anyone has converted their J2BD's over to J2B's. If so, would like to hear about your experiences and any recommendations you may have.
Thanks,

Re Colemill: Colemill closed down some time ago after getting flooded. Their STCs (the various 'Panther Navajo' stuff etc) were bought by Mike Jones Aircraft and are available through them.
