Out now looking for a Conn Rod bushing inspection within 10 hours.
Funny stuff, they warranty 16 man hours for checking all 6 rods on a TIO540. Good luck with that....
*edit* where the heck are we supposed to get this ST-531 tool?

we pulled ours and sent it back to lycoming - lucked out as we already had one built up QEC.

Few days and 10 hours....rough We're pulling ours tomorrow to start the inspection on the effected engine. I hate to sound cavalier, but my guess is this AD was too late for us coming out when our engine had 1200 hours, if it had had a bad bushing it would have grenaded at 300-400 hours (I've heard of 3 failures due to this problem, all below 500 hours SMOH) It's a pickle for sure, clearly these engines need to get looked at, but I don't get warm fuzzies about potentially thousands of engines getting topped in the field and potentially rods changed by guys who don't do this stuff every day. For example, the rod bolts on our motors are stretch bolts with a .001" window. How many of those can average A&Ps working in the field do before one gets done wrong and causes the exact problem this AD was meant to prevent? Too late now but my guess is that a frequent, careful oil/filter check would catch one of these before it went. |

Word to the wise if any of you do this in the field-don't leave the tool on the bushing longer than it takes to get a measurement. We found that out the hard way, one of my guys took a measurement and stepped away to record it and while he was doing it BANG the bushing moved 1/4" all at one shot. Other than that all ours were good, in fact what we found was that all of the rods were stamped outside the "bad" dates in spite of our engine being on the naughty list.
