Over this summer our fleet was eating up the old style MHB hartzell starters. Some were lasting 60 hours or less...... We finally switched to a sky-tech style and they have been bulletproof for over 6 months of heavy flying from summer weather all the way to the -40s. When switching you also gain like 8lbs a side since they are smaller. They turn a heck of a lot quicker also so the pilots aren't cranking forever to start an engine. If you are having MHB problems like we were these may be worth a look. (The right side does require a bushing to install and a few planes we had to lengthen the starter wires but not too big a deal at all to get them in) Highly recommended!

I was just about to ask about starters when I saw this post. Thanks for the info. What about the Hartzell E series starters. Does anybody like those better than the Skytec? Anybody had any issues with the Skytec ones? About 5 years ago I worked at a shop and we had nothing but problems with them and switched back to the MHB starters.

Tried an E starter a few years ago, it locked up while starting and broke the mounting boss right off the case. Sort of negated the savings we were looking for. Went back to the MHB.

Yeah we tried E and X-drive I think quite a while ago and one or the other was tearing up our ring gear teeth. Havent had issues with the new ones thankfully....
