A while back we were contacted by an outfit down south about an engine failure they had where the rocker shaft wore through the rocker valve cover tab. "...caused the rocker arm shaft to slip out causing the lug on the cylinder that holds the shaft down to break then the tappit body broke. Now I'm faced with slitting the engine to replace the tappit body" - wow...didn't think that was possible..... At the time we hadn't really experienced that issue but I brought it up with the crew during a Monthly Meeting. Lo and behold we find the issue when looking a bit closer. I hope we would have found during a rocker inspection anyway (fingers crossed), but the warning was helpful. Take a good look at your fleet - may be lurking out there for you also - ours was probably getting pretty close to causing some major issues. Tim

Interesting, why have we not seen this issue before? I happened to have seen this on a 1500 hour IO-540-K1A5 not long ago and figured it was only related to that particular engine.
What oil is everyone using?
The above case: Aeroshell straight weight 80w and 100w from 55 gallon drum.

We are using Exxon Elite 20W-50
One thing we did notice is that the tabs on the covers are all installed a little different, which may cause some slight wear - which we are used to - but this is definitely something new!
